BSC's Nuclear Power Program is First for Industry Standard Certification
Bismarck State College's Nuclear Power Technology program was approved in January as the first online program to be approved by the Nuclear Uniform Curriculum Program (NUCP)
for the non-licensed operator track. This will allow BSC students
completing the associate degree in Nuclear Power to substitute education
for training at a nuclear facility, since they will receive a nuclear
industry standard certificate.
In 2007, the
U.S. nuclear industry launched the NUCP, which is a standardized
certificate program designed to ensure the workforce is trained and in
place at the right time. By organizing industry partnerships with
two-year education programs, resources are leveraged to provide the next
generation of highly skilled workers. NUCP is managed by the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI).
As part of the
NUCP approval process, a college is required to obtain a Primary Utility
Partner for the Nuclear Power program. BSC has partnered with Exelon Corp.,
the largest owner/operator of nuclear plants in the United States.
Without a Primary Utility Partner, an institution's students would not
be able to receive a nuclear industry standard certificate.
"The most
important benefit of the new NUCP provision is that it allows
prospective students and employees greater access to nuclear training,"
said John Lindsey, director, Fleet Support & Partnerships, Nuclear
Training at Exelon Nuclear and member of the NUCP Ad Hoc Committee at the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations.
"The online format is beneficial for those who live far from a plant
and want to work at one, and also for those who are already busy with
their current lives and would like to continue their education; this
fits their needs and schedules."
For the past two
years Lindsey has been a member of BSC's Nuclear Power Technology
Curriculum Advisory Committee working with other select industry
representatives as part of the Energy Providers Coalition for Education (EPCE)
to advance BSC's nuclear-related online educational programs. The
nuclear industry representatives include American Electric Power,
Constellation Energy, Dominion Nuclear Business Unit, Duke Energy,
Exelon Corporation, Palo Verde Nuclear Generation Station, and South
Texas Project nuclear power plant.
"The National
Energy Center of Excellence at BSC is honored to tie the Nuclear Uniform
Curriculum Program to its Nuclear Power Technology associate degree
program," said Kevin Holmstrom, nuclear program manager at BSC. "The
National Academy for Nuclear Training Certificate is a tremendous
opportunity for students to now earn an industry-approved degree and
certification to get them on the right path for a career in the nuclear
industry."
Holmstrom and other BSC faculty
members have been working with Exelon representatives and EPCE over the
past year to revise BSC's Nuclear Power Technology curriculum to meet
the requirements for BSC students to receive the National Academy for
Nuclear Training Certificate. BSC has been approved by NEI as a
Non-Licensed Operator program. |

NECE Hands-on Lab Training
Bismarck
State College is proud to announce the opportunity for companies to
pursue hands-on technical training for their employees at the National
Energy Center of Excellence (NECE) facility. The NECE lab facility
is comprised of world-class tools, equipment and trainers, designed to
upgrade the skill sets and job capabilities of technicians and
operators.

Holly Burch Participating in St. Baldrick's Foundation Event
Baldness
will be a part of Holly Burch's life starting March 17. An
associate professor at the NECE, Burch said, "I am blessed enough to
have a choice - and not lose my hair because I am so sick and
suffering. My kids are healthy. I am so very, very
fortunate.....,"
Burch
has volunteered to be one of the "Shavee" participants for this year's
St. Baldrick's Foundation event on March 17 at the National Energy
Center of Excellence. This year's event is organized by Basin
Electric Power Cooperative. Burch and her son will be
participating along with several BSC employees and many other people
from the area.
With
a long list of family members who have had various forms of cancer,
Burch said she is a willing participant in this nationwide event that
raises funds for cancer research. But she said her career that
involves working mostly with men at a power plant and now at the NECE
also provides a reason to participate. She said, "I expect my
employer to hold me to the same standard as the guys, so - it is ALL
going to go!"
Burch
is asking for your contribution to St. Baldrick's Foundation as part of
her efforts in participating in the event. After 19 years of
teaching even one dollar from each of her former students
would be a lot of money going to a great cause. Visit her page
here to donate and view pictures: http://www.stbaldricks.org/participants/mypage/participantid/443749. |

Student Success Story - Katie Wilson
Growing
up as a ranch hand on her family farm, Katie Wilson knew all about
working hard. When Bismarck State College representatives visited
her high school and discussed the Power Plant Technology degree, Wilson was ready to take on the program.
Wilson
started the program in the middle of the fall 2008 semester after
switching majors. She excelled in her courses and caught up to the
rest of her class. In the spring of 2009 Wilson applied for Basin Electric's
Grow Your Own internship program. She was accepted with a group
of four other classmates and completed the first of two hands-on
internships in August at Leland Olds Station in
Staton, North Dakota. Wilson met the program requirements and
completed the second internship in the spring 2010 semester. After
completion of the Associate in Applied Science degree, she was hired as
a laborer at the same facility.
Wilson's
current position is a Boiler Attendant at Leland Olds Station.
When asked about internship opportunities, Wilson said, "Any internship
opportunity you see, take it. Don't say "Oh it doesn't pay
enough," or "It isn't very long.' The knowledge you will get
during these internships in worth it. Not to mention it helps
potential employers see you in action."
Albert
Weisbeck, Operations Supervisor at Leland Olds Station said, "Hiring
Katie Wilson is what I call a win-win situation and the Grow Your Own
program provided the ways and means. Katie impressed us with her
work ethic and willingness to learn during her internship through the
Grow Your Own program. I continue to be pleased with Katie's job
performance and great attitide. Katie tells me she's happy to be
working for the Leland Olds Station. That's what I call success."
Wilson
is very thankful for the Grow Your Own program opportunity and also
credits her NECE instructors with being very supportive, "If
you were struggling in something, and putting in a good effort, they are
willing to spend more time to get you set straight," she said.
Congratulations, Katie! |
