Full Simulations are large scale simulators that allow students to interact with effective and accurate models of real-world equipment or processes. Once prepared for a Full Simulation by using the Mini-Sims, students can use the simulator to gain experience in a safe and cost effective manner. To enhance the effectiveness of learning when using Full Simulations, the simulators have built-in scripted lessons (which take control of the simulator), help, and even assignments. Joe Wolfe
Sr. Vice President - Operations Rainbow Energy Marketing Corporation
Bismarck, ND
Joe Wolfe started out his energy career as a Senior Instrumentation Engineer for an oil exploration company. At the time Joe, a North Dakota native living in Bismarck, decided to enroll in Bismarck State College's Power Plant Technology program. Through BSC's program, Joe was able to get a good background and education in power generation that enabled him to start up a new company to establish relationships with numerous electric utilities in power marketing. Rainbow Energy Marketing Corporation has experienced tremendous growth from two employees to 35 employees in four locations around the United States.
When asked about Joe's experience at BSC, he indicated the tours to several of the power plant's water treatment and pipeline facilities for observance provided a great understanding of plant operations and equipment.
Joe provided this comment for anyone considering a degree in energy education:
"The time is now to get involved through education whether initial or additional education, especially as there are multiples of opportunities in energy. This number will only continue to grow going forward. The energy industry is currently staffed by dedicated reliable people that are aging. The future needs for the same dedicated reliable people will be needed as these people retire."
Congratulations Joe! Best wishes in your future endeavors. |

| Director of Great Plains Energy Corridor Office Hired |
|
Kim Christianson was hired recently as director of the Great Plains Energy Corridor Office, located in the National Energy Center of Excellence (NECE). This is a new position at BSC.
U.S. Sen. Byron Dorgan secured funding to establish a Great Plains Energy Corridor Office, which will provide education and outreach services to the energy industry, initially in North Dakota and eventually expanding to neighboring states.
Activities of the office will include facilitating two major energy conferences in Bismarck - the Great Plains Energy Expo and Showcase scheduled in November, and the Renewable Energy Action Summit, usually held in May; hosting additional "action summits" for particular sectors of the energy industry; and serving as a focal point for unbiased information on the current activity/status of the North Dakota energy industry.
Christianson has more than 20 years experience working with energy programs for both North Dakota and the U.S. Department of Energy. His primary areas of focus were with energy efficiency and renewable programs, including wind energy, ethanol, biodiesel, biomass and solar. He also was involved in some planning and policy development for other energy sectors in the state.
He served for 16 years as manager of the Office of Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency with the N.D. Department of Commerce. Other positions include working as an energy conservation specialist with the U.S. Department of Energy in Denver, and in the Office of Intergovernmental Assistance/Division of Community Services with the N.D. Office of Management & Budget. Christianson also has experience in community and economic development in the South Central Dakota Region and for the city of Underwood, North Dakota.
Christianson's wife, Gail, teaches 5th grade at Grimsrud Elementary School. They have two daughters, Merete, a senior at Macalaster College in St. Paul, and Laura, a sophomore at Bismarck High School.
Welcome Kim!
