NECE Program Feature - Process Plant Technology |
|
The Process Plant Technology program began in 1981 due to local industry demand for trained technicians to fill the open positions in the process facilities in the local area, such as Tesoro and Dakota Gasification Company. Since 1999, the program has been delivered online in addition to continued classroom delivery. The Process Plant Technology Program focuses on the equipment, systems and technology used in Process industries such as petroleum refining, ethanol and biofuels production, coal gasification and natural gas processing.
The program provides the foundational knowledge needed for working in these facilities including the safety and technical aspects of operating the plant, the work of a plant operator and the mechanical and chemical technology needed to gain employment in these and other facilities.

Graduates from this program are prepared to work in various areas of the industry, including refineries, gasification plants, ethanol and biodiesel plants, water treatment facilities, petrochemical plants and electrical generation facilities.
In addition, companies can utilize this program to supplement their training programs for new or existing employees.
Openings are still available for the upcoming spring semester on campus starting in January 2010.

| BSC Bachelor's Degree Approved for Air Force Members |
|
Bismarck State College's bachelor of applied science (BAS) in energy management program is now available for students of the Air Force Virtual Education Center.
BSC recently received approval from the Air University Associate to Baccalaureate Cooperative Program (AU-ABC) to provide the online program for Community College of the Air Force graduates. To be eligible, the graduates would need to have completed one of six specific associate in applied science degree programs.
"We're delighted that the Air Force has selected this Bismarck State program," said BSC President Larry C. Skogen. "The excellent reputation of our energy education programs, and our ability to deliver quality educational programs online factored into this new program approval that expands BSC's offerings for our nation's service members."
Airmen who are interested in pursuing a bachelor's degree will be able to learn about BSC's degree through AU-ABC. This is an initiative between the Air Force and civilian higher education institutions to offer baccalaureate degree opportunities to every Air Force enlisted member. The program directs airmen with associate in applied science degrees to a collection of accredited "military friendly" colleges and universities to consider when pursuing a four-year degree. Airmen who choose BSC will work directly with the college to complete program enrollment and degree requirements.
Since early in 2009, BSC has been a partner school with Community College of the Air Force to provide general education classes to Air Force members who are working on associate degrees.
BSC's BAS degree in energy management is designed to educate energy students to move into supervisory and management positions. Kari Knudson, vice president of BSC's National Energy Center of Excellence, said the BAS degree provides an opportunity for Air Force students to receive a degree in the highly demanded energy area. The BAS program was launched in January 2008 and has approximately 120 students located throughout the U.S.

Paul Sitte
2008 Process Plant Technology Graduate
Dakota Gasification Company
Growing up in Bismarck, North Dakota, Paul Sitte always knew BSC was a reputable school with reasonable tuition. In the Spring 2007, Sitte decided to take advantage of his local school and enroll in the Process Plant Technology program. He earned his Associate degree and the payoff has been huge.
After graduating in the Fall 2008 semester, Sitte started working at Tharaldson Ethanol, near Casselton, North Dakota. Most recently, he earned a position at Dakota Gasification Company, located near Beulah, North Dakota.
"As one of my teachers once told me, everything from generating power or refining gas to creating paper or cleaning water for city use all uses some sort of a process. That's exactly what the process program is about. It provides students with the information so that they will be able to succeed in any part of the industry," Sitte said.
When asked what he would say to others considering a career in the industry, he said, "I would strongly recommend the programs BSC has to offer. Shift work and plant life aren't for everyone, but it is a very strong industry with great possibilities for anyone who takes it seriously. The smaller classes at BSC allow students to have more one-on-one time with teachers, not only in the classroom, but in the labs, too. BSC has invested in a great new building and lots of new lab equipment to place themselves at the top of the nation in energy education."
